I am sorry to hear about your sad loss. Pets just like humans suffer from separation anxiety. It is quite horrible. There are a number of medical treatments available, however these are only available through your veterinarian.
 
Many pets are traumatised by thunderstorms (and fire works). One of the most effective ttreatments is to "desensitise" your pet with a  CD of thunderstorm sounds.
 
By playing the CD and using a reward system many pets can be comfortable in thunderstorms.
