Why does my dog chew?

When puppies are born they have what are called “deciduous”, milk or baby teeth.        These teeth are temporary and are replaced later in life by “permanent” teeth.

During the early period in a puppy’s life these teeth can irritate the gums of the animal. Often the best way to relieve this irritation is for the puppy to chew or gnaw on small objects. Sometimes the objects that are chewed are unacceptable to the owners and so it is advisable to provide the pup with a “Kong Toy” or similar indestructible rubber object.

If an adult animal starts to chew things that shouldn’t be chewed then this is mostly diagnosed as a behavioural problem and should be treated as such.
